The native land of this almond is China. Its abundant blooms and decorative aspect are of great interest to bonsai enthusiasts.
Terry pink flowers with a delicate fragrance open before or together with the appearance of leaves. Flowering lasts about 2–3 weeks. The fruits are non-edible.
Location
The almond likes bright sunlight and no wind. It should not be kept in shade, without access to sun and in wet places.
Temperature regime
It grows well at temperatures from +5 °C. At +8…+10 °C the buds begin to bud, and at +15 °C the tree blossoms.
Frost and winter temperature changes are poorly tolerated.
Soil
Should be fertile, light, sandy loam, pH 4.5-7.5 with the addition of humus or compost and obligatory moisture — and air permeable.
An excellent soil for him will be such a mixture: leafy soil: humus: sand (3 : 2 : 1). As drainage is ideal to use lava or pumice with the addition of Akadama. The root neck of the tree should not be deepened — it should be above ground level.
Watering
The plant is drought-tolerant, but during the flowering period it requires plenty of water. When watering, pour water strictly under the root, trying not to drench the foliage. Watering should be systematic or immediately after drying of the soil surface.
Fertilization
Fertilize bonsais throughout the entire growing season, from early spring to mid-autumn, choosing the right mix of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). For abundant flowering, you should use fertilizers with increased nitrogen, e.g., Biogold Original (see here).
Once buds start to form, switch to a fertilizer with increased phosphorus and potassium, e.g., Biogold Classic (see here).
Repotting
Recommended in the fall, after the leaves have fallen. Young trees should be transplanted once a year. After transplanting, it is advisable to mulch the soil with peat.
Winterization
Cool overwintering at temperatures above freezing and humidity of about 60% is necessary. Do not allow the soil to dry out.
Shaping and pruning
Pruning allows the plant to stay healthy and beautiful. It is done at the end of winter or immediately after flowering. Flowering branches should be shortened by 2/3 of their length. This procedure stimulates the growth of new, healthy shoots. It is also necessary to cut all branches that grow inside the crown.
After pruning, all wounds should be lubricated with a special ointment or mastic, as the wounds are released from the wounds very viscous gum amber-colored and this can harm the plant.
Diseases and pests
Almonds can be attacked by aphids, pinworms, and mealybugs. If pests appear and as a preventative measure, the plant can be treated with a soap solution.
