European smoketree (3031)

European smoketree (Cotinus coggygria) — an ornamental plant favored for its brightly colored leaves and fluffy inflorescences that resemble clouds of smoke. Smoketree prefers sunny locations (needs at least 6 hours of direct, sunlight per day). When grown in the shade, the plant will not be bright and abundant in bloom.

Soil
The plant is not demanding of soil quality, it can grow in poor and alkaline soil, but prefers slightly acidic or neutral soil. A thick layer of drainage is needed in the container, as stagnant moisture or overflow leads to root rot and death of the plant.

Watering
Young plants require regular watering for good root development. Mature plants are drought tolerant and require minimal watering.

Fertilization
Feed with a bonsai fertilizer. They are applied once a month from March through September. During the fall and winter months, nutrition is discontinued. Both liquid and granular fertilizers can be used.
