Description
Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii) “Ruby Star”. A spectacular plant when grown as a bonsai. The color of barberry leaves is carmine-red with a yellow border, becoming dark red by fall. It blooms in May with small yellow flowers, after which red berries are formed.

Temperature:
Thunberg's barberry is cold tolerant and grows best at temperatures above +10 °C.
In summer, temperatures above +35 °C make the plant more susceptible to sunburn, so it is best to move it to the shade.

Location:
Full sun or partial shade. In full sun you can get a more intense color of purple leaves, in those growing in semi-shade, the leaves have a green color.

Soil:
Barberries are completely undemanding of soils (6.0-6.5 pH). The optimal soil mixture consists of garden soil, sand, and humus in an equal ratio with the addition of perlite and sphagnum moss. Drainage should be placed at the bottom of the container.
